Auditory Or visual images
As the readers hear the phrase "A long way Down" it almost instantly gives the readers a sense of accomplishment for the upcoming future. Similarly in the book it shows the readers the characters journey through their lives difficult situations reaching their current position.
Jess sisters earrings are constantly mentioned by Jess's parents and Jess herself giving the readers a visual image of the a girl wearing those earrings. Readers are able to visualize Jess being a emotional girl however she has built walls preventing others from hurting her like her sister did when she ran away from Jess and her parents.
Maureen's son Matty who is paralyzed an in a vegetable state, the readers are easily able to visualize a young man suffering a complete paralysis sitting in a chair. The readers get an image of a mother who is almost on the verge of depression as her only life's goal is taking care of her adult son who is paralyzed.
The four characters arrive at a party looking for Chas. The readers are able to get a visual image of the party room as Maureen explains her view of the room " It was like a railway station toilet, expect there wasn't even a separate gents. There was a little wall separating the bath and toilet from the rest of it, so even though I needed to go, I couldn't...and seen what I was doing"(pg 65)
